Recently, we were asked to be part of the first episode of the Edge AI Foundation’s BLUEPRINT series, which explores how the Edge AI’s community is using these technologies to uncover real-world results.
Along with the City of San Jose and Leopard Imaging, we were pleased to report on how our edge AI sensing platform for vision, AITRIOS™, is being used in Smart City deployments and pilots, and the payoff it creates for pedestrian safety and curb management.
Leaving the webinar, there were several takeaways and considerations that resonated with me, on behalf of the smart city community. I am pleased to share these learnings as a recap on how Sony Semiconductor Solutions is addressing big challenges with cities and future opportunities to stay involved in finding the right solutions to the problems at hand.
City’s Challenge
Through the presentation from San Jose City’s Ho Nguyen, we learned about the challenge for the city. There tends to be a focus on innovative technology, but using the current-most technology is not solution enough for a city like San Jose. For San Jose, it was equally important to vet the practicality of the solution for a scalable deployment.
We can always enjoy cutting-edge technology in an unpractical environment. We observe the quick focus on new technologies happening commonly throughout the industry. However, when people perform the Proof of Concept (PoC) projects in unpractical environments, it's sure to be a dead-end route.
The city cares about how reasonable the solution is in terms of cost, installation, maintenance, and overall administration workload to implement. This process needed to be taken into careful consideration when proposing AITRIOS to the city.
Open Collaboration
Sony joined the Edge AI Foundation’s Pedestrian Safety hackathon last year as technology partner, and we have stayed involved in the community to help develop innovative solutions for the city. Instead of developing the solution by ourselves, we’ve also collaborated with other companies, to bring each company’s specialties together. That way we can build a better solution and have a better chance of introducing it to society on a wider scale.
Sony Semiconductor Solutions’ AITRIOS is open to collaboration with other companies as a means to build up the eco-system in bid scale. We plan to continue our open collaboration with the community and partners.
Working with the Edge AI Foundation
The Edge AI Foundation is leading the way to bring technology community and industry community together to stimulate the collaboration necessary to create innovation. Sony supports this direction and activations as much as possible as a sponsor.
We welcome any industry user to bring their challenge to Edge AI Foundation community, where we can work together to seek the solution with Edge AI’s specialist community all over the world.
